Packing for ASILOMAR!!

Yippee, I am packing for the Empty Spools Seminar at Asilomar, and a week of class with Judy Collins...............hooray, hooray!!

DH has decided to come along, so that will be great - he will swim and hike while I quilt..... and he will also TOTE STUFF!!!  yipee......
I am getting over my intimidation, and am now eager to begin...
And I found some of my quilts to be worthy of taking for show and tell...  this is a red letter moment - I have never shared my quilts in a show and tell before...  I have put some in shows, and lurked in the background to see people looking at them - but never held them up myself!!!
So - I'm gonna jump right in -  here's what I am taking:

My favorite -

Shadow Trapunto - Geta Grama design - not yet finished!

My never-ending hexagon quilt

more shadow trapunto from Geta Gamma's book!

Original design -drafting  class with Karen Pervier, Greensboro NC.

Hand pieced and quilted, design by Sharon Stroud in Ithaca, NY

started in a class in Ithaca, NY - love the purple piping!

Mystery Quilt, Kris Driessen, Quiltbug, New York

Original Design - using Selvedges !!!

We drive down tomorrow morning - - - CLASS STARTS AT 4:00  -  YIPPEE!

Stay tuned for fabulous photos!!

I'm having PERFORMANCE ANXIETY

On Sunday I'm going to the Asilomar Empty Spools Seminar.

I'm going to study with Sally Collins for a whole week.

Sally Collins makes perfect, precise, fabulous quilts with tiny pieces.  I wish I could do that.

We'll be doing drafting and precision sewing.

We're supposed to bring "our" quilts for show and tell...

We're supposed to "show" to the likes of Sally Collins, Gwen Marston, Judy Niemeyer, Mary Lou Wiedman and more...............

GIVE ME STRENGTH...  suddenly I can not sew a quarter inch seam, and all my quilts look like they came from the fifth grade Girl Scout group............

I'm gonna like everyone else's fabric more than mine.

I want to be the best in the class.............but I know I won't be.......

(no, this is not a self-photo;  I lifted it off the web - boy she has big teeth)

YOU WILL ONLY SEE THIS HERE ! !

 GATHER ROUND, EVERYONE !!!

IT'S AGRO-ART...

AFTER ALL, IT WAS AN ARTICHOKE FESTIVAL...  so feast your eyes on these masterpieces!!

i am sure the next one, featuring cabbages, is offensive to some established religion (apologies)
And then - I entered the wine tasting exhibit - AND THERE WERE QUILTS!!!!
These fine ladies were selling a raffle quilt, just in front of the green vegetable display...

What's a festival without an eating contest?  Artichokes??? The winner ate 20 ounces in three minutes!!

THAT'S THE NEWS from the Castroville, CA ARTICHOKE FESTIVAL!!

NEXT MONTH:  THE GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL  - - YIPPEEEE .  I CAN ALREADY SMELL IT.

Quilting My Brains Out

I'm quilting, quilting today...

First up, to continue quilting this gorgeous top - made by a fellow quilter, who sent it to me for quilting and donating... beautiful colors!!

finished !!!!  9:00 a.m.  Ready for trimming and binding now...
And next, back to this quilt... the one I went made on...  I can see the end from here, but it's still a good ways to go...
And a break to square up this lovely, made by a quilting program in the local ladies prison...  these ladies have not quite yet learned to make a square quilt - so getting it trimmed up was a bit of a challenge... but it's done, and ready for binding!
it's now just noon, and I've already gotten a lot done.  Lots more fun stuff to work on this afternoon!!

Happy quilting to all...

............of course, I will take photos...

Hands 2 Help Finish

Yippee - a finish!!! This is my H2H quilt...  you can read about H2H, which stands for Hands to Help, over at Sarah's blog...  Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Sarah has organized a big charity quilt drive - this one will go to another blogger, Emily, at Em's Scrapbag, who has promised 1500 quilts for a Chemo Center...  so glad to help, Emily!!

The color palette was chosen by my H2H partner Ruthie...from Design Seeds... she chose this:

So I looked in my stash, and found some lovely cool greens...

and then, I discovered this:  a giant stack of HSTs leftover from a Bonnie Hunter mystery - they just didn't work there, but they do now!!

And, boom, a quilt!!  And I really like it... Then I looked in a drawer, and there was a bunch of binding all ready to use - and it matched this quilt perfectly!!
Emily is only at 404, so you can jump in !!!!  Or join in H2H, and just sew fast!!

Happy Saturday to everyone,

Kate

Flittin Like a Honey Bee

oh my, my, but I am having so much fun with so many different projects going...  I just jump from one to another... want to jump with me????? here we go:

Some little 1.5 inch squares made some blocks like this:  cute, cute... what will they be when they grow up?  I have no idea.

I just HAD to make some 9 patches out of some more of the 1.5inch squares.  How will they be used??    No clue.
and some adorable little 4-patches with black as the 'neutral' - how will I use them...  ????
Quilting away on this - tiny pebbles and microstippling... i love it.  (Greta Gamma design)
and just putting this one together... next step is to sandwich and then stitch around the white design - that's the fun part! (same designer)
and I've been studying for Asilomar - Judy Collins book - she expects us to come prepared to jump right in - what else would one expect from someone who does such beautiful, precise work?

but this page gave me a headache...

tidied up blues and yellows - love it!

tidy blues and greens - oh my goodness - a space on the shelf - gotta go shop for more greens immediately!!
rut roh - this part not tidy....

Happy Quilting everyone,

Kate

Asilomar and Sally Collins in three weeks!!!

I'm counting down to Asilomar !!!

If you aren't familiar with the Empty Spools Seminars at Asiilomar - for heavens sake google it - it's just a fabulous set of week-long seminars...

In three weeks, I'll be taking this class with Sally Collins.
Sally Collins
Sampler Supreme

This class is filled with information, ideas, and new experiences and promises to advance your technical and creative skills. Within the scope of the class
project, you will learn how to compose your own unique quilt as we explore drafting categories; designing on an overall grid, color and precision piecing. You will gain the knowledge and confidence to exploit the opportunities for re-designing Sampler Supreme. Block design, size, placement and background design are yours to decide if you choose. Discover how exciting it is to create your quilts, your way. Sally's book "Drafting for the Creative Quilter" is necessary for this class and will be discounted to students.

Here's the photo of Sally's sampler - but the whole point of the class is to invent your own, draft your own patterns, and work with great precision on small scale works...

Well, for some reason, Blogger won't load the photo I tried to lift from the Asilomar website - but if you want to learn more, you can go to this link:

FUN AT ASILOMAR

Can't wait...
